There is a lot happening at the intersection of human rights and technology – human rights organisations are exploring innovative and creative uses of technology, and there’s increased interest in how technology tools are being used by human rights defenders.
Last year, we organised a series of community calls on the use of technology and data in human rights documentation as part of a project we were carrying out with Amnesty International and Benetech.
Now, as we see this community continue grow, we would like to re-introduce those calls with the goal of creating a platform for people to share new projects in the space, make connections between new and existing initiatives, and find out behind-the-scenes updates on how those projects are going.
The next community call will be held on Monday July 17th, at 5pm CET / 11am EST, using Uber Conference (details on how to join the call are below).
We will be joined by Jackie Zammuto, Program Manager at WITNESS, who will lead us through her experiences on using video to detect patterns of abuse and police violence in the US; and Madeleine Bair, Journalist and Civic Media Specialist, who will introduce us to her work on the Watching Western Sahara project. After their lightning talks, there will be time for questions

Anyone with an interest in the projects above or in the broader intersection of human rights and technology, is very welcome to participate – either just by listening, or by sharing what you’re working on. We’ll be using this Etherpad to document notes for the call in a comprehensive, participatory way, and and these will be regular calls – so don’t worry if you can’t make this first time.

We will be using an online conferencing service called UberConference. This service allows us to connect up to 100 participants using VOIP or phone. This is not a video conferencing system, so don’t worry about brushing your hair!
